As Canada looks within in the creation and sustainment of a vibrant and capable defence industrial base, one already in very much in play through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) but also to be further defined in the anticipated Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS), a key pillar to achieving success is the development, growth and retention of a highly skilled workforce. Moving beyond the NSS and the DIS, it is also critical to Canada’s sovereignty to ensure that our marine workforce, whether ashore or at sea, is diverse, highly skilled, and sufficient in terms of size and readiness to support our continually growing marine sector. In this context, what are the challenges and potential solutions that we need to consider?
